Residents of the
Berne-Knox-Westerlo school district approved the proposed
2009-10 school budget Tuesday by a vote of 499 to161. The
$19,791,067 budget carries no increase in the tax levy and a
2.7 percent overall reduction in spending.

cell tower prompts cell phone policy reminder
The activation of a Verizon cell tower next door to the BKW
campus this past week has prompted the Board of Education to
revise the district's cell phone use policy.
At the same time, Acting High School Principal Robert Drake
is reminding students that cell phones should be turned off
when they arrive at school and kept tucked away after 13th
period.

position effective June 29, the Board of Education announced
March 2. The board plans to discuss the search for a new BKW

named Coach of the Year
In just four years, Varsity Wrestling Coach Jeff Vogel
turned a wrestling team that took 45 minutes just to roll
out practice mats into a team that stands out among schools
with much larger teams and many more coaches. But Vogel says
it's the students - not him- that deserve the credit for
winning him the title of Section 2 Class D Coach of the
Year.

flu together: PTA to host flu vaccination clinic
With influenza
season fast approaching, your best recommended defense against
this serious disease is an annual vaccination. This year, the
Berne-Knox-Westerlo PTA will host a vaccination clinic from 3
p.m. to 6 p.m. November 4 in the Elementary School cafeteria.
The cost of one flu shot will be $30, but you may qualify for a
FREE flu shot or receive reimbursement from your health
insurance company.

mourns the loss of BKW High School student
The entire BKW district community is saddened by the death
of Ryan Slingerland, a sophomore at BKW High School. Counseling
services have been made available at the High School to help
students and staff cope with this terrible loss. We will
continue to provide this support as long as necessary. Any
parent who has questions or concerns regarding his or her child
should feel free to call the High School Office at 872-1482 so
they may be directed to the appropriate professional to
accommodate their needs.

The BKW Teachers
Association will hold a chicken barbecue fundraiser from 3:30
p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 2. Proceeds will
benefit the BKWTA Scholarship Fund. A $9 full chicken dinner
includes 1/2 chicken, baked potato, cole slaw, roll, butter and
cookie, and lemonade or iced tea to drink. A $6 half-order
includes 1/2 chicken only.

and institutions of higher learning access to student names,
addresses and telephone numbers upon request. This mostly

The new September lunch menu is now available. Students and
parents should note that lunch prices will increase 10 cents this
year, due primarily to higher fuel and food costs.

High School seniors who plan to drive cars to school this
year should stop in the High School office on the first day of
school (Sept. 4) to receive a parking spot assignment.
►Senior privilege forms available
Seniors who follow the school's student code of conduct and
maintain good academic standing are allowed to leave school
grounds during lunch and study hall periods with the written
permission of a parent or guardian. The following forms, signed
by a parent or guardian and returned to the High School office,
will enable seniors to exercise these privileges:

►Transportation Department changes bus routes for better
efficiency
In an effort to save on fuel costs and more efficiently pick up
and drop off students from school, the Transportation Department
has made changes to some of this year's bus routes. Students
whose bus routes are changing will receive a postcard in the
mail detailing the new route. Parents and guardians are
encouraged to
view the new bus routes here and read them carefully for any

►BKW students take part in WAMC Student Town Meeting
English teacher Gregory Speck’s Communications class recently
participated in "Student Town Meetings," a program sponsored by WAMC Northeast Public Radio. This program allows high
school-aged students to discuss social and political issues on a
live radio broadcast. On this particular broadcast, Speck’s
students talked about " why discrimination based on body image
has remained socially acceptable in the United States."
